As a woman of color, I am rare among construction workers: women make up just 2.6 percent of all employees in construction and extraction jobs. Hispanic women make up just 0.4 percent of construction workers, while black women are 0.2 percent, and Asian and Native American are each 0.1 percent. I have a background in finance accounting and management but never saw myself or my future in the accounting industry. As young lady who grew up in a very conservative family in a province in the Philippines and went to a catholic school I never imagined being involved in construction but we were never raised to believe that there were limits to what we could become because I am a woman or a female. I love being challenged and was excited when I got the opportunity to get a development project up North, that’s how I started in the industry and learned all aspects of construction from budgeting, scheduling, space planning and design to actual construction. It is a lot of juggling. I began to find myself drawn to construction. It’s the type of job where you are constantly solving problems and you have to think on your feet. I love seeing projects as it evolves and I felt it was a good fit for my personality. Being that there weren’t enough women builder in the industry this was a challenged for me. It didn’t take me long to realize that I want to part of building something and enjoyed it immensely. I wanted to be one of the formidable woman builder in the industry.
