John grew up in Charleston and is an alumnus of Porter-Gaud School.

He graduated from the College of Charleston Honors College in 2007. In 2011, he graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Juris Doctor from the USC School of Law and an International Masters in Business Administration from the Darla Moore School of Business.
