Soryu Karate-Doh curriculum includes instruction in kihon(basics), Kata(forms), and kumite(sparring). Within the Kata instruction we discuss bunkai(application) of each Kata and how it may relate to kumite(defense and offense). We treat Kata as a means to practice individually and not as an absolute of ones ability. We treat Kumite, again, as an opportunity to discover ones self in a safe and conditioned environment. As a student progresses in their individual development(growth), each student has the opportunity to demonstrate their skill through examination; hence, rank promotion. My Japan Soryu lineage is Frank Selvera(Soshukan Karate-do,Shibu-Dojo Instructor), Takamichi Koyasu(Japan Soryu Karatedo Association, Soke), and Michio Koyasu(All Japan Soryu Karatedo Association, originator of Soryu) My American Soryu lineage is GM Paul Chapa, Jr., GM Steve Besa(originator of the American Soryu Karate-Doh Association) the third student promoted under GM Joe Alvarado(Soryu Karate Institute), and Michio Koyasu under guidance (All Japan Soryu Karate-Doh Association). My study of Soryu began in 1972 under then Mr. Steve Besa. My study of Soryu continued with Mr. Paul S. Chapa, Jr. through the 80's and 90's. Our group collaborated with Mr. Jose Balli, also of Soryu in the early 80's. Together with Mr. Steve Besa's leadership and continuous growth approach, our group branched out and created the American Soryu Karate-Doh Association. We connected with the originator of Soryu, Michio Koyasu Soke in the mid-80's. Under his guidance and encouragement, we focused on his pursuit of courtesy and karate. Recently we connected with others with similar values and goals. Mr. Caesar Johnson of New York a student and advocate of the arts including Soryu has help bring past with present. He assisted the process of connecting those who wish to pursue the legacy of Michio Koyasu and his karate. Now, we currently meet and train with Takamichi Koyasu Nakamura, current Soke of the All Japan Soryu Karatedo Association. We at Soshukan are honored. Our mission is to teach students utilizing a continuous learning and improvement approach to focus on the self by way of Karate-do as it was taught by its originator, Michio Koyasu. Frank O.
