The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was established in 1971 by the OSH Act with the aim of reducing workplace injury and illness. That act gave OSHA regulatory power over private sector workplaces. Employers are required to provide a workplace free from serious recognized hazards and comply with standards, rules and regulations issued under the OSHA Act.
