The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was established in 1971 by the OSH Act with the aim of reducing workplace injury and illness. That act gave OSHA regulatory power over private sector workplaces. Since the passage of the OSH Act, the rate of reported serious workplace injuries and illnesses has declined from 11 per 100 workers in 1972 to 3.6 per 100 workers in 2009. 4,609 workers were killed on the job in 2011.
