Society has been using wicker type furniture since the start of civilization. Natural-rush furniture has been found in Egyptian tombs dating from 4000 BC and it is thought that hand caning originated in China centuries before Europeans saw their first caned furniture, such as the chairs seen in Dowager Countess of Grantham Violet Crawley's sitting room on the PBS series "Downton Abbey".
Hand caning and rush seat weaving are dying art forms and it is our intent not to let that happen. Every chair we see comes with a story or has a story yet to come! Our mission at Hank's is to restore your chair/furniture while refreshing the memory that accompanies it! Or possibly it's a chair with memories still to unfold!

I hand cane and weave chair seats on all kinds of chairs with "woven" seats. Once the chair is back in my studio I go over it and do any repairs needed and tighten up the dowels. I then go over it with Lemon Oil or Howards to make sure it looks its best. The seat is the very last step. I then stain the seat to match other chairs in a set or to just give it some age.

I learned to cane by my husbands grandfather in the 70,s. He learned from his father in law in the 40's and I don't when he learned. So this craft has been in the family for a very long time. I do most all styles of seat weaving including, hand cane, prewoven cane, Danish weave, splint, rush, porch rockers and some wicker repair. Minor furniture repair also. Free estimates. Quality work in a timely manor.

I am a seat weaver by trade which means I am working on customers' chairs 5 days a week. I have been doing so for 20 years.
I also have a nice selection of new and restored chairs for sale, especially rocking chairs which are my favorite.
When time permits, I create traditional and modern/green baskets which are both beautiful and functional works of art.
Occasionally I have the opportunity to create Green sculptures such as dragons, princesses, and galaxies.
