TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) is non-systemic and non-invasive form of neuro-modulation that delivers highly-focused MRI-strength magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in an area of the brain that is linked to depression. TMS has been demonstrated to be safe, tolerable and effective for depression. A 2010 triple blind study conducted by National Institutes of Health (NIH) concluded the odds of remission with active TMS were 4 times greater than placebo. The FDA has cleared TMS is for patients suffering from depression who have not achieved satisfactory improvement from prior antidepressant treatment. During treatments, patients remain awake while comfortably seated. TMS does not cause systemic side effects such as weight gain, sexual dysfunction, nausea, or sedation.
