Hoonah, Alaska, located on Chichagof Island, is also home to the largest concentration of brown bears in the world with approximately 3.5 bears per square miles. Bear sightings are a common-but thrilling-occurrence in Hoonah and most predominant June through August. The Island is also home to Bald Eagles, and over 250 variety of waterfowl, shorebirds, and common birds, making Hoonah a bird watchers paradise. Sitka black-tail deer, mink, marten, and beaver also thrive on the islands vast uninhabited wilderness. We offer daily Wilderness & Brown Bear Search Tours with a local guide. Our guide is an avid outdoorsman whose intimate knowledge of the Island and wildlife habits will afford our guests the best opportunity of sightings.
Hoonah is many things, a lively fishing community, an old logging town, the world's largest Tlingit village and home to the four original Tlingit clans, Chookeneidi, Taakdeintaan, Wooshkeetan, and Kogwanton. Legend tells of an original home of the Huna in Glacier Bay that was destroyed by a glacial advance, at which time many Huna moved to the location of present day City of Hoonah. We offer daily Hoonah City Tours with a local guide who was born and raised in the community. This unique and personal tour offers a peek into what it’s like to live in a remote Alaskan village.
