Hoonah, Alaska, located on Chichagof Island, is also home to the largest concentration of brown bears in the world with approximately 3.5 bears per square miles. Bear sightings are a common-but thrilling-occurrence in Hoonah and most predominant June through August. The Island is also home to Bald Eagles, and over 250 variety of waterfowl, shorebirds, and common birds, making Hoonah a bird watchers paradise. Sitka black-tail deer, mink, marten, and beaver also thrive on the islands vast uninhabited wilderness. We offer daily Wilderness & Brown Bear Search Tours with a local guide. Legend tells of an original home of the Huna in Glacier Bay that was destroyed by a glacial advance, at which time many Huna moved to the location of present day City of Hoonah. Sitka Whale Watch is owned and operated by Cody Loomis and his wife, Marlie Loomis. Both Marlie and Cody are lifelong Alaskans. Cody has over 30 years of experience operating fishing excursions and wildlife viewing tours in Southeast Alaska. Marlie and Cody live in Sitka year-round.
