Richard is a Licensed Acupuncturist in the state of Maine. He is nationally board certified (NCCAOM Diplomat status) in Oriental Medicine. He has many years of experience successfully treating many common and complex health issues with Acupuncture and related techniques. Richard A. Connell earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Maine in Orono. After 13 years in New Mexico and practicing as a licensed primary care physician and Doctor of Oriental Medicine he and his wife Megan, also talented Massage Therapist, returned back east to Bath, Maine to be closer to family and friends. Prior to practicing acupuncture, Richard Connell practiced Eastern Medical Massage and Asian Bodywork. Richard graduated from East-West Healing Arts Institute in Madison, WI with a specialty in Asian Bodywork and Eastern Medical Massage. He also attended The Wat Po Traditional Medical School in Bangkok, Thailand, where he earned his Certification in Traditional Thai Massage. He also earned a yoga instructors certificate after intensive study in Rishikesh, India. He received his graduate Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine training and medical degree at Southwest Acupuncture College in Santa Fe, NM, where he subsequently was an Associate Professor, teaching specialized and advanced acupuncture and manual therapy techniques. Mary Beth also holds a BA in Art History and Spanish from Boston College. In addition to her formal schooling Ms. Hassett apprenticed with Holly Guzman in Santa Cruz and Ken Pang in San Francisco and later Palo Alto. Holly taught Mary Beth the true subtleties of acupuncture and moxabustion (where an herb, moxa, is burned on or above the skin at acupuncture points). Holly's work was influenced by Kiiko Matsumo and the benefits of abdominal palpation; as part of a study group, Avi Magidoff furthered Mary Beth's instruction about Kiiko's style. Mary Beth studied more about Japanese acupuncture with a group of blind acupuncture masters from the Toyohari Association in Japan, and through this experience was able to hone her pulse-taking and palpation skills.
