Church Slate Roof Tiles
There are many elements to repairing church steeples. Starting at the top is often the cross. They are mounted at the most vulnerable location on a roof. Wind not only blows it back and forth, but it also twists it from side to side. This loosens the attachment fasteners. It wears away the socket through which it passes. And, it damages the structure of the cross to the point failure begins. We assess and make repairs.
Often steeples are made of wood. From the ground, they may appear protected by paint. But if you were to observe it close up you would discover very little of the paint is left, exposing the wood to moisture. Wood can last hundreds of years if protected by multiple layer of paint. Left unprotected it can rot in as little as 10 years. This makes it very important to have a regular schedule for painting.
There are many different quality paints for painting steeples. Each one has its own purpose. Be sure to choose the right one.
Slate roof tiles can crack and fail over time. Often a missing tile can go unseen for decades. It is extremely important to replace missing tiles because just one can allow damaging water to enter. Just because you do not see a leak on the inside does not mean there is not one present. Water enters where the tiles is missing. It runs down the roof boards between the tiles below and the roof boards. This moisture seeps into the nail holes, slowly softening the wood around them. Nails are held in place by compression. When the softness reaches the point of releasing the compression the nail falls out, along with the slate tile once being held. Not one realizes there is a problem until a large section of roof starts to sag. This is the tiles falling out of their placement due to nails no longer holding. Surounding tiles tend to pinch together their neighboring tiles preventing them from completely falling. At this point massive damage has occurred. A large amount of tiles will have to be removed.
Sections of slate roofing that is replaced will never be as good as the original. For one, Nails can not be installed as originally. That is because slate can not be lifted to install a nail. A type of hook system needs to be installed in order to support the tile. It is always best to replace any missing tiles before vast damage has occured.
