Middle Land Chan Monastery offers weekly classes in the fundamentals of Zen Buddhism and meditation throughout the year. The classes and meditation sessions are given both in English and in Chinese.
In the meditation sessions, students are taught the different methods of meditation, namely breathe counting, mindfulness of the breath, and middle way reality. The atmosphere is serene and inductive to quiet inner contemplation. Meditation needs expert guidance and discipline. The purpose of Zen meditation is to help us reach an understanding of the difficult problems in life and thereby gain true wisdom, clarity, and peace of mind. The way to achieve this is not by external analysis but by probing inward into our own minds.

We study the teachings of the Buddha as they are found in the Pali discourses and the Patimokkha of the Pali canon. Our tradition is known as Theravada which means teachings of the elders. The nuns order is being revived after it died out approximately 1,000 years ago. We depend on lay stewards in order to survive since we are alms mendicants. Please consider applying to become a volunteer lay steward at Mahapajapati Monastery. Our application is on our web site.

Our temple is a quiet space located in the mountains north of Ojai, dedicated to the practice of Serene Reflection Meditation (Soto Zen). Two resident teachers, Reverend Phoebe and Reverend Seikai, offer meditation instruction, retreats, and residential training, as well as weekly ceremonies and Dharma talks.
Meditation Groups in Ventura and Morro Bay meet once a month.
Funerals, memorials, weddings and house blessings, or a private talk with one of the monks can be arranged upon request.
To use our facilities for a Group Retreat in another Buddhist tradition please contact the temple.
