When a homeowner has an insurance claim they usually call their insurance company (or agent) first thing. Not good. The insurance company doesn't work for you. The insurance company sends out an adjuster of their own, their employee, to assess damages and figure out monetary compensation. The homeowner is paid and the claim is settled. Usually.
