In 1976, my grandfather was in the banking industry in Boise, Idaho. He loved banking, but having grown up on a farm, he wanted to do something related to farming without the huge investment and time needed to achieve this lifestyle. After careful consideration and visiting with other folks in the nursery industry, he chose to invest a small sum of money into the landscape and nursery business. My grandfather thus started what is known as ‘FarWest Landscape and Garden Center’ in Boise. He continued working for a local bank, retiring as a vice president after 23 years. At the same time, he worked evenings and weekends at the passion he truly loved, the landscape and nursery business. He took what classes were offered at Boise State College and elsewhere and in 1985 my grandfather purchased property on a major street in Boise and started a retail landscape, nursery and garden center. At the time of this purchase, he was still working for the bank, but his wife Mary, my grandmother, worked as the ‘Operations Manager’ for the company and helped make it the success it is today. Several years ago, he sold my husband and I a business he started in the 1999. That business is ‘The Home & Garden Store” in which my husband and I formed an LLC some time later. Although there were no assets or income being generated by that business, with his assistance we are able to now proceed at making this business a productive and viable business. During this tenure in the landscape and nursery industry, I worked for my grandfather and learned from him the value he always placed on customers and that above all, treat them the way you would want to be treated.
