GROUND UNITS BJJ academy is a welcoming Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy in Amherst, MA and serving all surrounding communities. We offer classes for teens (16 years +) and adults of any age. We strive to maintain a safe and positive atmosphere where all team members, no matter what their age, gender, or physical capabilities, can develop skills required for personal safety as well as sharpen their mental focus, motor skills, levels of confidence, discipline, stamina, and overall fitness (body, mind and spirit). In case you are not familiar with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), it is a fantastic martial art or sport. It is one that emphasizes technical grappling moves and leverage skills that allow the practitioner to defend him/herself against a larger, stronger or faster attacker. It gives practitioners the ability to efficiently and effectively subdue, or submit, an attacker or opponent into compliance and end an attack. Many victims of vicious attacks wind up on the ground, whether intentionally taken there or not. The fight, or confrontation, may begin standing up and then continues to the ground where grappling skills are needed. Because of this fact, our training is primarily geared towards the ground aspect of personal safety. While most are not comfortable on the ground, here we are at home… Of course, not everyone trains for fear of being attacked. Many train for fun, the exercise, the challenge of it and others for competitions or MMA (mixed martial arts). But it is comforting to know one is actually able to truly defend oneself – at any age. BJJ also has benefits in other areas, such as behavior at home, school and work. It even helps with one’s patience. Surely, all enjoy and have fun training BJJ. Come by and give us a visit. Pineapple Dance offers top quality instruction in ballet, contemporary, hip hop, tap, and traditional Irish dance. Our faculty are accomplished professionals who teach with passion and care to all students. We produce three annual performances, the highlight of which is "A Tribute to Swan Lake" presented in January. The company is available for booking.
