The scene was so common that early settler's call the place Smoke Hole. Legend also has it that during the Civil War, gold bars and coins were hidden in the Caverns walls. Early settlers also made there cavern a home for making West Virginia Moonshine. The clean cold stream that flows through the Caverns was perfect and it has been told perhaps as many as 20 stills operated there at one time! Don't forget to also bring your camera to take pictures of the "showy" part of the caverns--the World's Longest Ribbon Stalactite, the Room of a Million Stalactites, Artesian Well and other natural marvels.
