The mission of Black Soil: Our Better Nature is to reconnect Black Kentuckians to their legacy and heritage in agriculture. By bringing together urban families with rural and urban based Black farmers/growers/producers across the state, we help introduce opportunities in agriculture that promote self-sufficiency, encourage healthy living, and activate cooperative economics. Our vision is to help foster a greater marketshare for Black farmers and producers as they provide healthy food options to a larger consumer base.

Walnut Hall Farm was established in 1892 to breed Standardbred horses. Over its more than 100 years of history, it has enjoyed great success in breeding successful Standardbred sires and broodmares. The farm has remained in the same family over the years, and the current generation of owners continue to run their own Standarbred breeding businesses. But Walnut Hall is not just about horses. Since the very beginning, Walnut Hall has hosted a beef cattle herd. In the early days, the beef cattle were joined by dairy cattle as well as pigs and sheep. While the dairy herd is gone (as are the pigs and sheep), the beef cattle remain. They are organized into three separate herds - Angus, registered Charolais, and Angus-Charolais cross.
