By respecting the uniqueness of your character and life circumstances, and engaging in a dynamic healing process, you give yourself the message that you matter, and that you deserve a full life. We carry issues with us from the difficulties we have faced, but these issues never diminish our value. We have an innate dignity that no one can ever take from us, even when we have been hurt or made to feel ashamed. Healing is always possible when we face our issues with courage and dignity, respecting that we have gotten this far through our inner strengths. We can begin to experience relief from issues once we become aware of their meaning in our lives. They formed to protect us, but they no longer serve us as we grow older. Instead they interfere with our relationships and also in our inner lives. Working together in mutual respect and compassion, we can address issues and encourage the beginnings of self love. Healing is an ongoing process, not an immediate one, but the rewards are limitless. The majority of high-functioning people in this world suffer with anxiety and depression; it is merely a matter of degree. We all have issues, but we also have the right to develop understanding around our issues. The more we gain in self-awareness, the softer the appearance of these issues in our lives, and over time, they can even heal. In our culture, we place a great deal of emphasis on self-esteem. I prefer the term self-love. As we develop self-love and compassion for the self, we gain exponentionally in our capacity to change from within. True healing tends to the root of the issue, and we must be patient with ourselves through this process. We are all used to valuing immediate results, but sometimes, the hard work and the time spent on a project can increase our sense of positive self-regard. What greater project do we face in life than our own selves? If we can put the time and the energy into our relationships, our studies, our careers and our families, we can also dedicate time to ourselves.
