Mary is a 72 year old woman who has had a total mouth and jaw reconstruction after her diagnosis of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma. On March 6, 2012 Mary underwent a 14 hour surgery at Brigham and Woman's Hospital. The surgeons removed her lower left jaw up to the mandible, a large portion of the hard and soft palette, part of the tongue, the cheek lining, left tonsil, and all the lymph nodes on the left side of her neck. They replaced her left jaw bone with titanium and reconstructed what they could in her mouth with her left arms tissue, nerves and veins. Due to the extensive surgery she has a large gap in the roof of the mouth which will not allow her to really eat or drink anything without it going into her nose.
