Richard's focus on oil painting led him to the plein air painting technique. It's basically a branch of impressionism that emphasizes painting in open air and outdoor light. He enjoys painting on location to capture the true essence of the scene. "My intent as an artist is to emphatically develop my craft as a painter. In doing so, I want to push the scale, consistency, intensity, and emotional quality of my work. I don't simply want to paint pretty pictures but canvases that reflect the sensation of being outdoors emotionally and spiritually...paintings that are not only artistically well rounded with color, value, composition, texture, and structure but, real works of art that retain substance."
