Hammond-Harwood House (1774). The only colonial home in America built to a design of the famous Italian architect Andrea Palladio. The Anglo-Palladian style residence was based on a plate of the Villa Pisani in Montagnana, Italy by William Buckland one of America's best known colonial architects. Built in 1774 on the cusp of the American Revolution; it is considered America's greatest colonial high style residence. This architectural "Jewel of Annapolis" was greatly admired by Thomas Jefferson when he sketched the house in 1783. The woodcarvings surrounding the front door and enriching the dining room are some of the best surviving woodcarvings in America. Today the house museum exhibits famous colonial art by Charles Willson Peale, Rembrandt Peale, James Peale, John Trumbull, John Hesseli
