Benjamin Jay (“BJay”) Durrett handles a broad range of residential and commercial transactions. BJay helps clients with everything from home purchases and refinances to complex business and land transactions. BJay focuses on serving all of the legal needs of lenders, real estate brokers and agents, developers, investors and other real estate professionals, as well as the clients they serve. BJay recently received the prestigious Alta 2.0 Best Practices Certification by Heard, McElroy & Vestal CPA firm, and is a licensed title insurance agent for First American Title Company of Louisiana. BJay is passionate about helping people and has a talent for helping clients navigate transactions quickly and smoothly. BJay enjoys teaching seminars and routinely speaks at events for area lenders and real estate agents, including a TRID and Best Practices Compliance Seminars for Lenders and Realtors. BJay is married to Melissa Kendall Durrett. BJay and Melissa are the proud parents of three boys, Noah, Hayden and Liam. He is a graduate of Louisiana Tech University where he graduated with Honors. BJay attended law school at Louisiana State University Law Center where he earned both his Juris Doctorate and Bachelor of Civil Law degrees and was a member of the Louisiana Law Review. At LSU, Mr. Durrett completed specialty coursework in Sales and Real Estate Transactions, Advanced Business Law, Civil and Common Law Property and also studied Comparative International Property Law abroad at Universite de Lyon III, Lyon, France. BJay assisted drafting legislative amendments to Community Development District Act and was instrumental in resolving client’s “hot button” legal issues by working closely with the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office to interpret and draft opinions regarding the Louisiana Public Bid and Lease Laws and Intricate Contract use and interpretation. BJay also authored several papers, including "Competition for New Money Heats Up - Additional Tax-Exempt GoZone Bond Allocation is Available for Projects", which was published in Focus on Business in January, 2010, and "Fiduciary Duties for Corporate Directors and Officers: A Practical Primer on the Responsibilities of Louisiana Board Members", which was presented to the Louisiana Workers' Compensation Corporation in June 2009.
