The PASS Program was started almost twenty years ago here in Champaign, Illinois. The objective was to establish a place where any medical student could come to in order to truly understand medical information, beginning with the basic medical sciences. We wanted an environment in which a student felt no shame, no loss of pride, and no humiliation for the academic difficulties that he or she had suffered. I wanted to provide students with the academic support that they needed. And, in doing so, we wanted to help them find the academic growth, spiritual growth, and personal growth that they would need in order to develop into outstanding physicians of the future. We wanted them to look forward to, rather than to fear, the future.

Spangehl Higher Education Associates is a thought leader in defining approaches that create academic quality in institutions of higher education. The effect of our work is to prepare institutions to successfully achieve regional accreditation.
We identify best practices in all areas of education and standards that typically exceed the expectations of accreditation. We guide institutions in the application of those practices in to produce significant and lasting improvement to their academic programs and other operations. To accomplish this, we rely on a proven community of seasoned academic professionals who encompass a wide range of talents, and we recruit and welcome new associates who can extend our expertise to strengthen our ability to achieve our mission.
We also believe that there are key values that should guide that operation of a successful institution. We seek to promote these values through all our consultation and assistance:
- Ethical behavior. Education professionals have a fiduciary duty to act in the interest of their constituents, even if that interest conflicts with their own.
- Honesty and Integrity. Truthfulness forms the foundation for honest appraisals and good decisions. We are honest with our clients. We will never lie to them, or to others in their behalf.
- Continuous Quality Improvement. Institutions of higher education should never be satisfied that they are meeting their mission 'well enough.' With help and guidance, an institution can always improve any area it selects.
- Academic Freedom. Knowledge advances by considering all ideas and perspectives, and selecting the best based on logic and evdience. A diversity of perspectives and opinions brings value, and dissenting voices should never be silenced, even if they are wrong.
- Transparency. Organizations and their employees must have access to the information essential to achieving success.
- Commitment to Stakeholders. External constituencies (students, parents, taxpayers, employers, etc.) depend on an institution to provide results and services that meet their requirements. Knowing stakeholders' needs and wants is essential for an institution's success.
