Auto Focus Security is approaching its 25th anniversary and currently services over fifty car dealerships in the Southeast. Over the decades we have made many discoveries, But none more important than “MORE IS LESS” in our business. I’m sure that outside security companies have approached your management team with the latest and greatest equipment, showing off 4K cameras claiming that they can read a license plate from a mile away (They cannot). Not only are 4K cameras very expensive, they use an incredible amount of bandwidth, eat up an even larger amount of storage space, and finally are less effective at detecting motion and contacting a central monitoring station than a standard IP 1080P camera. Why? For the same reason that the human eye cannot focus on an object five yards away and 100 yards away simultaneously. A camera simply CANNOT be set up to detect motion from 100yards away, without motion also being triggered by bugs 3 feet away. Also, beware of technological lingo that sounds great but isn't what you'd assume it to be. For example "facial recognition" would lead you to believe the cameras capture better images of faces and therefore provide better evidence for police departments. This is NOT the case! Facial recognition (Panasonic or otherwise) simply alerts the system when a pre-programmed (illegitimate) face has passed by a camera, mounted near face level, in a closed environment. i.e. casino card counters, or REPEAT offenders making fraudulent payments of whom you already have a facial image! Simply put, the IP camera resolution has far surpassed its usefulness in PREVENTING crime. As far as we can tell, the only real advantage to 4Kplus cameras is better recorded video of somebody stealing or damaging your property… the following day. That by nature is CRIME ATTENTION. Auto Focus Security is not in the business of crime attention. We are in the business of crime prevention. In short….If crime prevention is your goal, as is the main goal at AFS: Then why invest in a Corvette when the job at hand requires a work truck! What good is a sports car that seats two to the mother of three school children? Don’t be fooled by slick sales people with no real world automobile dealership security under their belt.
