An understanding of consonant(stable) and dissonant(unstable) tones that fit within Diatonic Scales and well as the Consonant tones that don't fit within the diatonic scale (want an example? try playing a major chord into a recording device. Now play the Lydian scale, #4, over that chord. Now play the natural 4th on a down beat. The major 4th sounds awful over that major chord doesn't it?).
