Here’s what you need to know about our audiometric exam, what to expect during the test and how to interpret your results. Audiometry is the science of measuring your ability to detect variations in intensity and the pitch of sounds. Your ability to recognize speech and distinguish speech from background noise will also be tested. Taking the test: You will place the headphones over your ears. I will play some tones and you will let me know when you hear the "beeps." Your responses are then mapped out on a graph, referred to as your audiogram. Next we will test speech discrimination: You will hear a series of two-syllable words at gradually decreasing volume. You will be asked to repeat the words you hear, best you can and I will record the softest volume level at which you can detect spoken words. Next, you will be asked to repeat a series of one-syllable words that I will play at a constant optimized volume. We will review the results of your hearing exam with you and answer any questions. Your audiogram looks like a graph. Along the top of the graph, lies the frequencies (pitch) in Hertz and along the left of the graph lies the sound levels in decibels (volume). The blue Xs on your audiogram signify the softest decibel level at which you are able to hear each of the frequencies in your left ear and the red Os signify the results in your right ear. Don't expect to see identical results for both ears. Our bodies are almost never symetrical. If a hearing loss is detected as we review your audiogram, we will perform an additional test. For the next test, you will place an additional headband called a bone conduction transducer over your head. The additional test helps us to determine, a rare instance, in which further medical evaluation by a specialist may be necessary. After testing is complete, your hearing specialist will identify pattern(s) in your audiogram in order to determine how you the patient, may best be helped.
