Located in Kenosha Wisconsin, the Civil War Museum is like no other museum in the country. The 15,000 square foot permanent exhibit gallery showcases significant Civil War artifacts important to the regional and national Civil War story. Through state-of-the-art audio and video technology, life-size dioramas, a 360° Movie Experience, and interactive engaging exhibits, visitors travel back in time and experience the history that influenced the social, political and economic outcomes of the Civil War.
The newest addition, and featured centerpiece of The Fiery Trial, is the 360° Movie Experience, “Seeing The Elephant”. Seeing The Elephant, is a high-tech, 360 degree, digital movie, that takes the audience through what is best described as an experience. The technology required to achieve this unique event is offered only by a handful of venues throughout the nation. Seeing the Elephant is a powerful, multi-sensory film with a ‘moving cyclorama’ referring in part to huge in-the-round paintings that caused a popular sensation more than one hundred years ago.
The film offers an authentic, and historically accurate, glimpse of a soldier’s first encounter with combat; what the soldiers referred to as Seeing The Elephant. The accredited Civil War Museum opened in 2008 on Kenosha’s lakefront campus. 57,000 Sq Ft covers American Civil War history like no other, offering the enthusiast a chance to learn about the contributions of the Upper Middle West - Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, and Michigan.
The Museum includes a Veterans Memorial Gallery, resource center, archives and Kenosha’s electric streetcar. A special gallery honors and recognizes the contributions of all American veterans. The gift shop has a great selection of unique Civil War reproduction collectibles, books, souvenirs, music, videos/DVDs, and more.
Museum Hours: Monday-Saturday 10 am-5 pm, Sunday Noon-5pm, Closed Holidays.
