A regenerative thermal oxidation system consists of flow through ceramic heat exchange media. In the heat exchangers, raw gas and clean gas alternately reverse direction. The heat exchanger beds are connected by a shared combustion chamber. After entering the system, the contaminated gas is routed through one heat exchanger in the direction of the combustion chamber. In this phase, the contaminated raw gas is heated by the energy stored in the ceramics. In the combustion chamber, the organic pollutants are destroyed at a defined temperature (T>1500°F). The hot clean gas leaving the combustion chamber heats up the ceramics of a different heat exchanger. In this process, the gas is cooled down to nearly the temperature of the raw gas and is then exhausted via the stack. This means the thermal efficiency of the equipment is in the 95% range, therefore operating costs for such a system can be very low.
