Interview with Norma Roldan Burnson,
Author of "Sustainable Food for the Globe: One Square Foot at a Time"
Norma Roldan Burnson was born in the Caribbean, but says she "felt at home" when stationed in Rota, Spain. "My name in Spain is Señora Norma Ivelisse Roldan Suarez de Burnson," Norma said with a smile. A United States veteran, Norma has made her home in Chicago, Illinois, since the late 70s. As you can tell from the book's name, Norma is a great fan of Mel Bartholomew (and he is quoted in her book) and she is an avid supporter of Square Foot Gardening.
"What was you motivation or inspiration for writing this book?" I asked. "My motivation for writing this book was to call to task all the naysayers predicting doom and gloom by stating that as a planet we are going to run out of food by the year 2030. My inspiration for writing this book came after watching the video 'A Forest in the Sahara Desert.'
"What do you hope your book will achieve?" I asked. "Well," she answered, "My goal is to make food production available to every able body on earth. Starting with getting our young generation involved, by seeing that providing food is a high status and honorable career. Secondly, I want to galvanize U.S. veterans into becoming Square Foot Gardening instructors and mentors worldwide. Third, and most importantly,
