Montessori Child Development Center was established in 1978 and is administered by the same director. Marijane Schafer, a trained Montessori teacher and administrator, chooses AMI and AMS head teachers who lovingly prepare the environment and lessons for the children. We are a small school where parents and children are treated with respect. The classrooms are neat and orderly with a full complement of beautiful Montessori materials aesthetically arranged to enhance learning. The back yard is much more than a playground with gardens and small farm animals for the children to observe, learn and care for. Skills Learning Center, was founded by two passionate educators dedicated to providing a Montessori education for their children. Nearly 500 students have attended Skills Learning Centers Poway PreSchool since its inception and graduates are represented at all private schools as well as a large number of public schools in the Poway and San Diego area.

Maria Montessori, the founder of the educational method that bears her name, observed that young children possess "absorbent minds". They are capable of learning all manner of things - enriched vocabulary, eye hand control, listening skills self-care and social graces, athletic and artistic activities - with relative ease. The key to the child's success during the early learning years is having access to an educational program that responds to their insatiable curiosity and desire to explore the world. The hands-on nature of Montessori learning affords the toddler an opportunity to absorb the knowledge and skills that build self-esteem, self-discipline, socialization, and creativity.
