Special Police Officers who carry firearms are required to complete a 40-hour firearms course before they can be licensed as an armed SPO. This course includes classroom instruction to discuss the policy on the Use of Force, Use of Force Continuum, Handling of services weapons, Weapons Safety, When SPO may discharge their firearm and when discharging a firearm is prohibited (Code of the District of Columbia↪ Title 22. Criminal Offenses and Penalties.) followed by a written examination, and followed by weapons qualification. Upon successful completion of this course the student is issued a training certificate.

Requirements:
Security Officer (SO) Must be at least 18
Special Police Officer (SPO) - Must be 21 at least
• Be free of any felony, domestic and ADW convictions;
• Be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship (SPO officers must be US citizens at time of appointment);
• Be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record;
• Be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation;
Be a high school graduate, pass the General Education Development test
• Be found to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a Security or Special police officer.
