The Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) is an Australian Government agency. We provide support and provide information for: veterans and their dependants Australian Defence Force personnel war widows/widowers Australian participants in British Nuclear Tests in Australia members of the Australian Federal Police, and students, teachers and historians. The services we provide include: pensions and compensation health care rehabilitation counselling services help for servicemen and women returning to civilian life commemorative and community grants home care assistance subsidised loans for housing and other housing-related benefits commemorative activities, and historical information. Our commemorations program promotes understanding of Australia's wartime history and the significance of national events such as Anzac Day, Remembrance Day and Vietnam Veterans' Day.

Our role is to protect and enhance the safety, health, well-being and quality of life of people receiving aged care. We promote high quality care and services to safeguard everyone who is receiving Australian Government funded aged care.

VVCS provides free and confidential, nation-wide counselling and support for war and service-related mental health conditions, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and depression. VVCS also provides relationship and family counselling to address issues that can arise due to the unique nature of military service. VVCS counsellors have an understanding of military culture and can work with clients to find effective solutions for improved mental health and wellbeing.

It is not always possible or sensible to have market competition in the provision of essential services where large scale infrastructure, and therefore significant capital investment, is required. This is because there may be only one possible supplier (for example there may be only one possible site for a dam) or it may not be economic to have more than one supplier (for example the costs of constructing a new electricity distribution system would simply outweigh the benefits). In these circumstances, there may be limited, if any, competitive forces available to constrain the behaviour of businesses, especially in the provision of essential services such as water, energy and transport. Our role is to put in place arrangements to prevent the abuse of market power which may arise from the lack of competition.

The Veterans' Review Board (VRB) is an independent tribunal that exists to review: decisions made by the Repatriation Commission under the Veterans' Entitlements Act 1986 (Cth) on: claims for acceptance of injury or disease as war- or defence-caused claims for war widows', war widowers' and orphans' pensions assessment of pension rate for incapacity from war- or defence-caused injury or disease claims for the grant, or assessment of, attendant allowance determinations under the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2004 (Cth) made by: the Military Rehabilitation & Compensation Commission the Service Chiefs of the Australian Army, the Royal Australian Navy, and the Royal Australian Air Force The VRB reviews decisions made by officers of the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) who have been given power under the VEA by the Repatriation Commission to decide claims for pension and applications for increase in pension.
