Keep in mind, not all martial arts programs are the same. Having taught in various schools over the last two decades, I can personally attest that some schools "sell" belts solely for profit, testing students automatically every two months regardless of the student’s actual abilities or improvements. After 30 years in the arts, I've seen it all and am upfront about certain things - just because a school looks authentic, doesn’t mean it is, especially if there are students earning black belts in just two years. One thing we are not is a "kinder-gym," where instructors focus more on games instead of actual martial arts. Our students are led to become well-rounded in all aspects of the martial arts, not just sparring or performing demos. They learn self defense from their first class as well as the philosophy of respect.
