Dr. Hammon is the son of a Naval aviator. He lived in California, Virginia and Maryland before attending junior high and high school in Rhode Island.

Dr. Hammon then returned to Oregon, the home of his parents, to attend the University of Oregon. He graduated with honors in 1980. Dr. Hammon then attended OHSU School of Dentistry, graduating with honors in 1983. He then completed a one-year hospital dental residency at Denver General Hospital. This was followed by one-year residency in dental anesthesiology at the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
