Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian Martial art that is centuries old. It was developed by African and Native slaves in captivity in Colonial Brazil. It was hidden in music, dance, and lyrics to negate its effectiveness in the eyes of the slave owners but was an extremely effective and stealth martial art that aided in slaves' escape. It was outlawed in Brazil in the 1890s but resurfaced in the early 20th century as both a traditional art of Angola and a contemporary art and sport known as Regional.
