Indigo Handloom is a mission-driven for profit social enterprise. We supply handwoven fabrics and scarves to the fashion industry. All of our products are made without any electricity. Our mission is three fold: low-impact job creation, the preservation of the handloom craft and reducing the environmental damages of the fashion industry. We create jobs in rural India in areas with little or no reliable sources of energy. By making handloom or handwoven fabrics - the average weaver can make a living for himself and support an average of eight family members - while maintaining an average carbon footprint of 1.19 tons per year (an average American is 48). This is what we consider a 'low-impact' job. In our products, you will see the ancient techniques of 'khadi' (hand-twisted thread), 'batik,' and 'jamdani' - but recast them for the sensibilities of North America. We are concerned with preserving the cultural heritage of the regions we work - and we do this by adding quality control skills that make these regions competitive in the western marketplace. And finally, our overall mission is to offer the fashion industry products that have a zero or low environmental impact. Indigo Handloom is based in Oakland, California and just celebrated its 12th anniversary. Our company was founded by Smita Paul, a former journalist, in her two bedroom apartment in Brooklyn in 2003. In the past 12 years, Indigo Handloom has produced hundreds of thousands of scarves and fabrics. We do this with a workforce of several hundred weavers, dyers and spinners in India.

I was born and raised in Michigan by parents who have always encouraged my creativity and imagination. I migrated towards art in high school and fell in love with metalworking and industrial art shortly after I started college. Through many influential teachers and an awesome community, I learned that I could make good use of my workingman's hands and problem solving skills in a metal shop. I have worked as a blacksmith, welder, machine operator, fabricator, DJ and a few other things over the last eight years and I try to do things each day that will help refine my craft. After being employed in a few shops since I moved to Oakland, California in 2009, I decided that in order to create the life I want, I needed to start building my shop and taking some risks. I started my company Axial to Terminal mid 2012 as a way to better manage the projects and commissions I do, and I hope that I will soon be able to use it as a vessel to teach as well. Being an artist is a lifestyle I love, the world is an animated and fascinating place when you can actively engage in the creation of its things. I love to learn about new machines and processes, collect junk, see how people are clever in their solutions and teach people how to weld. I listen to music ALL THE TIME, I have a warehouse dog named Kenya, and a lot of awesome friends and family who have helped make this possible.
