The CCHS is comprised of a complex of museums, house museums, genealogical archives, research library, and award-winning scholarly magazine, dedicated to interpreting and preserving the history and culture of Columbia County, New York.
The Columbia County Historical Society is a private, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the interpretation and preservation of the history and culture of Columbia County, New York.
It is the goal of CCHS to encourage understanding, knowledge, and preservation of the County's heritage through the acquisition and conservation of historic architecture and properties, objects and documents, and through the sponsorship of research, publications, exhibitions, and educational programs.
To help achieve its mission, the CCHS owns, maintains, and interprets collections and buildings of historical significance, and operates a museum and extensive research library.
The Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse represents a literary symbol; the very special Luykas Van Alen house an unique vernacular legacy of New York’s earliest Dutch settlers; and, the Vanderpoel House an elegant example of early 19th century Federal style in upstate New York.
Education programs for adults, schooltrips for children, public tours and exhibits at all four historic properties and our award-winning magazine, 'Columbia County History & Heritage' together present a centennial accomplishment and describe 100 years of preserving our stories.
For one hundred years, thousands of people from all across Columbia County and beyond have enjoyed CCHS exhibitions and education programs. The CCHS research library holds important and unique genealogical materials and hundreds of maps, photographs, and other archival material.
