Joining Cary Gastroenterology in 2022, Dr. Sonia Abichandani is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Dr. Abichandani is a graduate of Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. She received her medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Abichandani completed her Internal Medicine residency and went on to serve as the Ambulatory Chief Resident at University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. She then completed her Gastroenterology and Hepatology fellowship at University of North Carolina, NC, and served as the Chief Fellow from 2021-2022. She has a special interest in women's GI health and anorectal disorders.

Dr. Malhotra did her internship and residency in internal medicine at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington D.C., and continued her fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology here, as well. Dr. Malhotra also completed an advanced fellowship in inflammatory bowel diseases at the University of Maryland Scholl of Medicine in Baltimore Maryland. Dr. Malhotra served as Assistant Professor of Medicine at Medstar Washington Hospital Center and Medstar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington D.C. prior to coming to Cary Gastroenterology.

Joining Cary Gastroenterology in 2021, Dr. Brian Lappas is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. He is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Dr. Lappas is a graduate of Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. He received his Masters of Public Health from the UNC Gillings Scholl of Global Public Health and his medical degree from the University of North Carolina Medical School. Dr. Lappas completed his internal medicine residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. He then completed his Fellowship at the University of North Carolina, in Gastroenterology and Hepatology and was Chief Fellow in 2020-2021.

Stephen J. Furs, M.D. Board Certified Gastroenterologist Dr. Stephen Furs has been part of the Cary Gastroenterology team since 1997. Board Certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine, he is also Certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners and is a life member of the National Registry of Who's Who. He's a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterology Association and the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the NC Society of Gastroenterologists, and the NC Medical Society.

Joining Cary Gastroenterology in 2001, Dr. Michael Brody is Board Certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine. He's a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterology Association and the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Dr. Brody is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA. He received his medical degree from the Thomas Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia, PA, where he was awarded the Henry Keller Mohler Memorial Prize for as an outstanding medical student in Therapeutics. He then completed an internship and residency at Thomas Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Brody completed his gastroenterology/hepatology fellowship at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Chapel Hill, NC, with subspecialty training in esophageal disorders, including Gastroesophageal Reflux, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and disorders of the biliary tract.
