Honolulu Dance Studio (HDS) began in 1986 with nine (9) elementary school girls directed by Cathy Izumi. They teamed together as a performing company (Honolulu Gurlz Dance Company) based at Danceworks Studio in Kaimuki. In 5 years the dance program expanded to include several Divisions-Keiki, Junior, Teen, Senior, Adult and Professional. The contemporary dance studio moved to the Waterfront Athletic Club in 1991, and in 1992 became the HDS and Honolulu Dance Company (HDCo.) of today.
