Blue Oak was founded in 2002 by two families who wanted to create a school where students would be encouraged to stretch and grow and given the tools to become independent learners. What began as a K-4 school with just over 70 students is now a thriving TK-8 school with more than 190 students. While the majority of our students come from Napa, the Blue Oak community includes families from Calistoga, St. Helena, Rutherford, Yountville, American Canyon, Vallejo, Fairfield and Sonoma, along with families who have recently arrived in California from New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, Australia, and China. Blue Oak’s eighth-grade graduates enroll in high schools near and far.

Blue Oak School is Napa Valley’s only independent TK–8 school, located in downtown Napa. Since 2002, we’ve provided a progressive, inquiry-based education that nurtures curiosity, creativity, and confidence. With small class sizes and a student-centered approach, we focus on academic excellence, social-emotional growth, and real-world learning. Our curriculum includes literacy, math, science, social studies, Spanish, art, music, P.E., and mindfulness. Unique programs like “BreakAway!” and community-based projects engage students beyond the classroom. In 2024, we opened a state-of-the-art middle school campus to further enrich student experiences. The American Gunsmithing Institute offers distance education in the following programs: Professional and Practical Gunsmithing, Welding, and Machine Shop including instruction in Lathe, Vertical Mill and General Machine Shop. These courses are comprehensive and easy to understand, enabling the student to become an expert in a short amount of time, while learning from their home.
