Townsend was an outrageously successful, very straightforward CEO with American Express and Avis Rent-A-Car. Here is what he said in his one-page chapter entitled "Headhunters". "Occasionally you may have to go outside to fill an opening. If you use a headhunter, go to the trouble of writing out your description of just the man you need (in your own words, not job description boiler-plate). When he sends someone for an interview, spend some time with him, even if at first glance he's not what you're looking for. Then call up your headhunter tell him in some detail where he's on target and where he's off. Do this after each candidate. Pretty soon he'll zero in and start sending you the kind of people you want to choose from."
