The best writers understand their target audience. Application essays differ from school essays. Sure, both have to be well written, but the application essay has to be written FOR college admissions officers. While high school English teachers advise their students to write about their passions, I have found through my research and discussions with admissions officers, that they don't want to hear about "passions." They want to hear about the applicants. In other words, I help students promote themselves using their passions. The colleges are much more interested in learning how an experience has affected a student than merely hearing about the experience itself.
